4 Ways to Reduce Your Reliance on Air Conditioning This Summer

Most Americans are looking for ways to reduce their energy usage and as summer quickly approaches, this requires taking a look at how they’re using air conditioning. According to a recent study, about 5% of all electricity we use in the U.S. goes to air conditioning, which has a total cost of more than $11 billion a year. At Half Price Drapes, we’re here to offer some tips to help you keep your AC usage to a minimum this summer.

1. Upgrading your cooling system

How old is your air conditioning system? If it’s more than ten years old then you may want to consider replacing it. Today’s units are much more energy efficient and can save you as much as 30% on your utilities each month. There are a ton of options out there, from traditional central air conditioning units to mini split systems. Regardless of which one you use, if you invest in a newer unit you can count on it working more efficiently.

2. Use rebates to help upgrade your home

Don’t forget to check out rebates and tax incentives designed to encourage people to invest in products that are energy efficient. For example, your utility company may offer this type of discount. There are also federal tax programs that may provide significant tax credits if you upgrade your insulation, install an HVAC system that’s more energy efficient, or install energy efficient windows.

3. Find the best window coverings

Window coverings can help dramatically reduce your utility bills if you use them correctly. For rooms that get a lot of sun, we recommend Roman shades, dark draperies, or roller shades. These will all prevent the sun from coming in and warming up the room. You may choose to use sheer curtains to let in some sun while preventing the room from overheating.

4. Little changes can make a difference

Believe it or not, seemingly small changes can have a big impact on your energy use. For example, use all appliances that produce heat, such as dryers, stoves, or irons, either at night or first thing in the morning. Use LED light bulbs, seal leaks around your doors and windows, and make sure that your weathers stripping and / or caulking is in good shape. These are just four ideas that can help you be comfortable in your home this summer without wasting energy unnecessarily.
