Considering a Job as an Interior Decorator? These Are the 7 Most Important Things to Know

Many people dream of being an interior decorator but the truth is that it’s not the right job for everyone. At Half Price Drapes, we know that all it takes is high-quality products and a keen eye to design your own home, but when it comes to designing others, here are the seven things you should keep in mind.

1. There’s a difference between a designer and a decorator

It’s common to use interior decorator and interior designer interchangeably but in reality they are different. Anyone can start an interior decorator business but if you want to be a designer, you’ll need at least a Bachelor’s Degree.

2. Your interests must be well rounded

If you have decorated your home beautifully and get a lot of compliments on it, then that may be a sign that this is the job for you – but it could also mean the opposite. If people often tell you that you have a unique style, make sure that you’re going to be able to design in other styles.

3. You won’t like every home you work on

Remember that your client is the one who has to live with what you do and they’re the one who has to love it. It’s fine to give them advice but if they are steadfast that they want something, you have to give it to them – even if it’s not to your taste.

4. It’s important to be good with people

If you dream of choosing velvet drapes all day, that’s great – but remember that you’re going to be hanging those draperies in someone’s home.

5. Be willing to take criticism

You can expect most jobs to go like this: You present a client with a realized idea and they ask you to go back to the drawing board – over and over again. You must be comfortable taking advice and following through on it.

6. You need to know your history

Even if you elect not to go to school for interior design, you still need to know the basic history of past styles, fabrics, etc.

7. It may not be the right fit for you

The truth is that you may have more fun decorating your home and offering friends advice than you would running a business. Regardless, Half Price Drapes is happy to be a partner for your own home or you first client!
