More Dos and Don’ts to Decorate the Perfect Home

At Half Price Drapes, we’ve offered many decorating dos and don’ts over the years. Today we’re going to bring some more to you in the hopes that they’re helpful as you look for ways to decorate your perfect home.

Do: Fill your home with personality

Be inspired by your favorite places, your favorite foods, your hobbies, and the best experiences you’ve had in your life. Using boring items that you can find in any home goods store will result in a very sterile look in your home. Note that adding your own personality doesn’t have to mean a cluttered home – you can be minimalistic and still have your personality shine through.

Don’t: Give in to the temptation to go over the top

When a family goes on a dream vacation and takes 100 pictures, they may feel like they should display all 100 of them. The truth is that nothing in your home is going to look perfect if you overdo it. Instead of hanging all the photos, make a collage of some of your favorites.

Do: Let color in

Many homeowners are anxious about adding color but it’s actually a great way to make your home look unique. Once again, you just don’t want to go over the top. Don’t paint every wall along with the ceilings. Instead, add elegant wallpaper to a wall to make it a focal point, or buy colorful curtains that brighten up the space. Color can be especially good at making smaller spaces looking bigger and brighter.

Don’t: Overdo the white

If you love light colors, and white in particular, just remember that it isn’t always the most realistic color to decorate with. Any family with pets or kids will soon find that their light-colored furniture, flooring, curtains, etc. will be stained before they know it.

Do: Go for quality over quantity

It’s better to have fewer pieces of furniture but have the pieces you have of high quality, then to have a room full of cheap furniture. Buy one piece at a time and before you know it, you’ll have a collection of nice pieces.

Don’t: Skip measuring

If you’re going to spend hundreds or thousands on a sofa, make sure that it’ll fit before you swipe your credit card. If you’re going to buy high quality curtains, learn how to measure for curtains. Measuring once can save you time and money in the future.
