Getting Ready to Decorate with Color? Don’t Miss These Two Tips

Tip Number One: Count everything in the room

When you’re thinking of where to add colors, consider everything both inside and outside of your room. If you can see it from the room, then you should consider it. Most people will consider what’s actually in the room, but they won’t necessarily look beyond the four walls to see what else is visible. As you’re planning colors for one room, look at the other colors that are visible. How can you make sure that they fit in with the colors you’re adding? Will the colors work well together? Don’t just pay attention to the hues, but to the size and shape of large, brightly colored items. For example, if you have a luxurious blue sofa, then you’ll want to see that color reflected somewhere else, perhaps in a picture on the wall or in some beautiful blue curtains.

Tip Number Two: Learn the golden proportion

In design, there’s something known as the golden proportion. It’s identified as 60:30:10. What does this mean? It means that the domino color should be about 60% of the color in any given room. Its job is to set the mood of the room. Next is the companion color, which should make up about 30% of the color in a room. Its job is to either activate or calm the dominant color. For example, think about a black dress. If you had red shoes with it, they would activate the color, while tan shoes would calm it. Finally, there’s an accent color, which should make up about 10% of the color in a room. Its job is to give definition to the room. Think of it at as the jewelry paired with a dress and shoes.
