Interior Design Tips When Combining Two Households

If you and your partner are moving into together, then there’s a lot to be excited about – but there are also some serious decisions to make. If you’re both coming from homes that are fully furnished, then you’re going to have to decide whose furniture will make its way to the new space, along with window treatments, and other décor. Here are just a few tips that can take some of the pressure off in this situation.

Start by agreeing on a theme

Before you move into together, sit down and have a conversation about what the theme will be. This will make it much easier to decide whose furniture makes the most sense. For example, some themes you may decide on include shabby chic, rustic, French, modern, contemporary, or nautical. If you don’t do this, then the pieces you decide to keep will likely end up looking mismatched and not well designed.

Make a list of everything you have

Next, each of you should sit down and write down everything you have. This will make it easier to ensure you pick up the things you don’t have, and to see what you have too many of. Once you’re both done, look at your lists and you’ll easily see what you need to buy and where you have duplicates. It’s much easier to decide what you’ll keep when you know exactly what you have.

Be sure to make compromises

You probably won’t want to compromise. After all, you likely spent money, time, and energy picking out your furniture. They likely have sentimental value. Don’t forget that your partner is having the exact same experience you are. You’ll both need to decide what’s really important and try to compromise. For example, let’s say your partner agrees that you can use the headboard you bring to the relationship. You might then want to let them keep something they really love in the bedroom. If you really hate something they have, be honest, but be willing to put up with it. Ask yourself: Is it so important that you don’t want to move in with them? If you really get stuck, then you may want to hire an interior designer who can make unbiased decisions. Remember that no matter what type of window coverings you need, you can find a ton at Half Price Drapes – including custom curtains.
