Would You Let Strangers Have Control Over the Way Your Home is Decorated?

It’s certainly an interesting time to be alive, what with the advances in technology every year. One new, interesting idea we’ve been keeping our eye on is an app that allows strangers to offer design advice on your home. Currently only available on Apple products, this app requires you to do nothing more than take a picture of the space you want to design and then upload it to an app. Designers will then look at what’s there and offer ideas on the best style they see for the room, the best way to decorate on a budget, or even the best way to decorate with a small space. The people who created the app say that this is a perfect app for those who want a second (or third!) opinion on their décor. The interface is similar to Snapchat, and those giving advice can drag and drop images of furniture, can tag pictures to add comments, can change the color of the walls, and can write over designs. What you’ll end up seeing will be what that stylist imagines for the room, right down to the carpets and the window treatments. The app has other features too, like allowing you to keep track of every piece of furniture you’ve bought for a space, or are considering buying. It can also automatically create a to-do list for you if you want to follow the design of one particular person. This can make it virtually painless to get all your new pieces and complete the renovation. While this is a good idea, we can see a few possible problems. First of all, we know that a lot of people who are redecorating a space aren’t looking to change everything in a room. If you’re just looking to make a few changes, then you may be better off simply finding some window shades you love, or a rug that works well in your space. Another issue is that there isn’t currently a way for you to tell designers what you want. They can see what you have, they can see furniture you’ve bought, but you can’t let them know that you’re not interested in stripes, or which colors you want to avoid. This takes out some of the personalization of using a designer. That said, it’s a fast, convenient option that will work for many homeowners.
