When you read blogs and advice columns on decorating your home, you’re likely to regularly come across advice to make sure that your lighting works for your home. While that’s good advice, many people are confused by what it means exactly. At Half Price Drapes, we’re here to break it down for you – room by room.

Tips for kitchen lighting

Recessed lighting works great when it’s placed overhead, but under-cabinet lights can add even more illumination to the countertop. Not only does it look interesting, but it makes it easier to work in the kitchen. There are strip and rope LED lights, which you can hide by adding a rail at the bottom of your cabinets. If you have a unique collection in your kitchen, consider over-cabinet lighting to accent it.

Tips for dining room lighting

Think of your dining room as a spot that you typically use for entertaining. As a result, you want to draw your guest’s eyes to specific parts of the room. Generally, that’s the table, so your brightest light should focus on your table. A chandelier on a dimmer is a great choice. For the rest of the dining room, use matching sconces, sideboard lamps, or a mirror hung to reflect the natural light coming in through your windows.

Tips for living room lighting

The goal in your living room is to get rid of any shadowy areas. Recessed lighting, table lamps, walls cones, and floor lamps all work well. We also suggest that you use different types of lamp throughout the room and that if you have a reading chair, you make sure it has enough lighting. If your living room has a focal point, such as a piece of art, use lights to accent it. If you have a beautiful view, buy custom draperies that will show off your view and draw attention to it.

Tips for bedroom lighting

The goal when lighting your bedroom is to create a space that’s warm and cozy. You want your dressing area to be well lit but your bed and the areas around it should be more softly lit. Once again, dimmers are great for this purpose. If you’re lucky enough to have a trey ceiling, be sure to add your lighting there. Lamps are great for reading, and sconces can be installed above the bed – just be sure the lighting isn’t harsh.
