Of course, we will always recommend that homeowners choose curtains and draperies based on their own personal preferences, but we also think it can be fun to get a look at what designers are doing. Here a few decorating trends that are reportedly already passé.

Shiplap

If you’ve watched any decorating shows in the past few years, then you’re likely very familiar with shiplap. It’s been a go-to remodeling material for interiors of all styles. Essentially, it’s a type of wood paneling that may look good in some cases but is incredibly difficult to remove. It also doesn’t mix well with some house types, including Tudor and Colonial.

Carrara marble

Is this a stunning type of marble? It sure is! But it’s also very expensive and extremely high maintenance. It stains very easily and homeowners who’ve installed it are crying foul across the country. Expect to see easier to maintain countertops like soapstone and quartz. We’re also told that the dramatic styles of countertops are out altogether, so expect the quartz and marble to be subtle and understated.

White on white on white

We’ve seen lots of very popular rooms that seem to be just layers of white on white on white. This is going by the wayside too. In 2017, we’re seeing a lot of bold color moves, which don’t fit well with whites and whites and whites. However, if you already have a room that’s totally outfitted in white, the good news is that you don’t have to completely redo it to make it stylish again. Just look for some curtains with a bold, bright color, or even update any room with cellular, honeycomb, or Roman shades.

Glamor

This trend isn’t going away entirely, but we are seeing that entire homes decorated in an over-the-top glam style are slowly incorporate some more earthy tones and understated décor. In 2017, we’re seeing a return to natural materials and more personalized interiors with photos coming up as a top decorating accessory.
