Preparing for Spring: Spring Cleaning Tips

It may feel like all we’ve been doing since the spring of 2020 was cleaning and sanitizing everything in sight. That’s the good news; the daily rituals we developed during the pandemic to keep our space shiny clean and germ-free should make spring cleaning in 2021 a breeze. And that will give you plenty of time to focus on DIY décor and updating your home décor based on the latest design and curtain trends for spring. So, let’s get started right away. You can tackle spring cleaning in just five easy steps and then move on to sprucing up your home décor based on your favorite spring style guide from Half Price Drapes.

Set a Schedule for Yourself

Whether you decide to tackle your entire spring cleaning project in one weekend or clean one or two rooms every day after work, create a schedule and stick to it. Don’t forget to reward yourself when the job is done. Perhaps you want to add some new DIY décor items to your home, or update your home décor based on the latest upholstery and curtain trends?

Clear the Clutter

A clean home is a clutter-free home. Just ask Marie Kondo. While you don’t have to go as far as the organization expert recommends, slimming your library down to a single bookshelf or transferring all your beauty products to separate containers, it does make sense to toss anything that doesn’t have a use or “spark joy.” Be mindful of what you do with items you don’t want. It isn’t right to pawn them off on unsuspecting friends or relatives, either. Make three piles:
  • Throw away
  • Donate
  • Keep, use and/or display
De-cluttering your home may seem like an insurmountable task. Set a schedule for yourself and take it room by room, day by day. Soon, you’ll be ready to move on to the next phase.

Wash Down Surfaces

With clutter cleared, dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning the surfaces of your home should be quick and easy. Work from the top down, so you won’t have to re-do lower surfaces and floors as you knock the dust down from the ceiling and upper shelves in your home. From the kitchen countertops to your bathtub, you’ll want to allocate a few days to tackle deep cleaning the surfaces of every room. Disinfecting wipes make the job easy, although if you want to be sure your cleaning efforts are eco-conscious, consider reusable cloths (you can use old t-shirts) and cleaning solutions made from vinegar, water, and lemon juice. Dust and then deep clean countertops, shelves, and even walls. Don’t forget to clean your windows to show off the latest curtain trends in the best light. Wash windows with glass cleaner or a mixture of vinegar and water spray for a streak-free finish.

Focus on Upholstery

Using a HEPA vacuum can help get furniture, carpeting, and upholstery clean by removing dirt and dust, as well as allergens. As with deep cleaning other surfaces, always work from the top down so dust and cobwebs you knockdown from the ceiling or even off ceiling fans won’t settle on already-cleaned surfaces. Aside from the most delicate curtain sheers, you can vacuum most curtains to remove dust and allergens. Keeping your curtains clean and new should require nothing more than vacuuming, but if you want to wash them, follow the manufacturer’s care instructions and use the gentle cycle, with cool water and mild detergent. Hang to air dry. For extra dirty curtains, carpeting, or furniture upholstery, you may want to use a steam cleaner.

Update Your Home Décor

With everything sparkly clean and older items gone, it’s time to fill your home with DIY décor and other items that bring you joy, as the saying goes.
