Finding the right paint color for any room in your home can be a tricky situation, but it can often seem even more important in the living room. After all, you likely do much of your entertaining in this room and it can essentially set the tone for your entire home. At Half Price Drapes, we’ve found some tips that can help you pick the right color.

Draw from the most significant pattern in the room

If you have any type of window coverings or furniture that are significantly patterned in the room, then start by considering that color. For example, take a look at your silk patterned curtains and choose wall colors based on the major or minor colors in them. If you have a rug, pluck a color from its design. If you don’t have a lot of patterns on your furniture or accessories, then that’s a good sign that you’ll most like a neutral paint color.

Memorize this: Dark is down and light is up

One of the easiest ways to make any space look incredible – without taking on much risk – is to start with your darkest colors on the floor, use medium colors for the walls, and then add light colors on the ceiling. Think of your living room as resembling the world outside: Generally the earth is dark, what’s in front of you is a little darker, and then the sky is lightest of all.

Trust the color wheel

If you’re not familiar with the color wheel, now is a good time to get there. Basically, any color that’s next to another color on the color wheel – like blues and greens – are going to make causal and relaxing colors schemes when used together. This is a great option when you want to decorate a living room that’s relaxing.

If all else fails – Go with gray

You may think of gray as today’s trendiest color, and that’s true – but it’s so popular for a reason. It has the seemingly magical ability to be either warm or cool, depending what it’s next to, and to pair great with hot pink, pastel, citrus shades, bright greens, and most any other color you can think of.
