Tips for Washing Your Window Treatments

Can you wash your window treatments? You can if they specifically say that they’re washable. If not, then it’s best to have them dry cleaned or to follow the care instructions on the tag. At Half Price Drapes, many of our products are made from high quality silks, velvets, and other fabrics that can’t stand up to the process of washing. However, if you do have curtains that are labeled washable then here are some tips that can help.

One disclaimer: Even some curtains that say they’re washable aren’t really washable

We generally advise that if your curtains say they’re washable, then they’re washable. However, there is one notable exception: Curtains that have any type of embroidery or any other embellishment that was added after the curtains were manufactured. While the curtains themselves may be washable, the embellishments may not be.

Tips for washing curtains in the washing machine

If you’ve decided to machine wash your curtains, make sure you use the gentle cycle. You only want to use cool water, even if the colors are light and even if there’s a significant stain. Mild detergent is also the only option that should be used. You may find laundry detergent made specifically for draperies but if you don’t, then anything labeled for use on gentle fabrics should be fine. When you wash your curtains, make sure that you don’t overload your machine. It’s better to run your curtains through on a handful of cycles rather than shoving them into just a few and ending up with curtains that ended up in a jumbled mess, or worse – got ruined. Once they’re washed, you can dry thoroughly in the dryer or allow them to air dry. Don’t hang them up to dry because the extra weight of the water can affect how they naturally hang. Instead, lie them down on a bed or floor, but be sure to put towels down first so that they don’t pick up any debris.

Tips for washing curtains by hand

If you’re going to wash your curtains by hand, then many of the same rules as above apply: Use a gentle detergent, wash them thoroughly, and either dry them in the dryer on low or air setting, or let them air dry. The most important thing when washing them by hand is that you rinse them thoroughly after they’ve been washed. No matter how you wash them, you’ll want to iron them when they’ve dried. Do this on the side that faces your wall or window when they’re hanging.
