Doing your own home remodeling is a great way to save money but it can also be a great way to deal with a lot of hassle. At Half Price Drapes, we’ve seen many clients have success with their own DIY projects and we wanted to share some of their secrets with you.
1.Plan your time ahead of time
If you’re planning to sit down on the day of your remodeling project and figuring out how to time everything out, then you may end up with hours and hours in a row where you’re working hard, and then hours and hours where you’re doing nothing but waiting. If you take some time to plan your day ahead of time, then you can make the most of all your time.
2.Make sure you have all the materials you need
This is one of the most common mistakes people make – not having everything they need. We’ve heard from clients who had to make three or even four trips to their local hardware store because they kept running into things they hadn’t thought to pick up. Once again, this is why planning is so important. Make a list of all materials you need and then either locate them in your home or buy them – before the day of your project!
3.Do you research
If you find a tutorial online for a particular project, that’s great but make sure you do your own research too. For example, the tutorial may recommend a particular type of drapery hardware only because that website has a relationship with that company. Take the advice you get but make sure you do other research too.
4.Take your time
Don’t rush through the project. Whether you think it’s fun and can’t wait to see the final product, or you don’t like the process at all and just want it to be over with, rushing through the project is never worth it. Slow down and make sure you do it right the first time – it will take less time in the long run.
5.Get started first thing in the morning
Even with the best planning possible, you may still run into unexpected snags. If you don’t start your project until mid-afternoon and something goes wrong, you may find yourself having to choose between an unfinished project or staying up all night. We recommend starting in the morning so you’ll have plenty of time to finish.
