Designers will tell you that there are no real decorating mistakes. As long as you love the pieces you buy, you’ve made the right choice. At Half Price Drapes we mostly agree with this advice but there are a few things that we have to insist are always decorating mistakes. Read on to see if you agree with our assessment.
1.Treating a home like a showroom
Yes, you want a home that looks great but most importantly, you want a home that’s comfortable to live in. This doesn’t mean that you can’t be an art collector, or buy luxurious, high-quality couches. It just means that you should not only think of what your furniture and accessories will look like – you should consider how they’ll function. If you don’t do that, then you’ll likely find yourself with a home that’s great to look at but that you don’t much like being in.
2.Spending money on areas that don’t matter
Most everyone has a budget when they’re decorating, and to ensure you stay within it, you must make some sacrifices. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to spend money on something that’s not necessary and then not have enough left in your budget for something that is necessary. This often happens when no plan is created. A homeowner will get excited, find a table they love, and spend a large chunk of change on it. Then they’ll go to find the right couch and discover that they can’t find anything that will look good with the side table. Likewise, no coffee table really complements it. Now they don’t have money for important things like high quality draperies because they’ve spent so much on something that’s not actually that important.
3.Buying the wrong sized furniture
A small room can’t handle big pieces of furniture and small pieces of furniture will be lost in a large room. Too often, homeowners assume that they can make up for the off-sized furniture. They think that they can buy an oversized chair for a small room and not add any other furniture, or that they can buy many pieces of small furniture for a larger room. The reality is that it’s going to look just like what it is: A room that was just thrown together. No matter what else you take away from this advice, remember that having high quality draperies is the number one way to transform your home from “before” to “after.”
