Dealing with a Small Space? 6 Ways to Make It Look Bigger

Whether it’s your bedroom or your living room, if you have a small space in your home that you wish was bigger, there’s not much you can do about it. Is there? While it would take a contractor to actually make the space bigger, at Half Price Drapes we have some ideas on how you can help it feel bigger.

1. Buy pieces that serve several purposes

The more cluttered a room is, the smaller it’s going to feel. This is why it’s wise to look for pieces of furniture or accessories that can meet several needs at once. For example, an ottoman that doubles as a storage space.

2. Raise it up

Look for tables, couches, and chairs that have longer legs that help them sit higher. The higher they are, the taller the room will look.

3. Use mirrors strategically

The classic tip to make a small room look bigger is to hang mirrors strategically. This may be advice that’s constantly being pushed but for good reason – it works! Don’t put a mirror on every wall, but if you can reflect natural light around a room, it will look brighter and bigger.

4. Hang your curtains as high as you can

When you pick out the perfect draperies for your room, order them extra tall. As we mentioned above with the long legs on furniture, the taller your draperies are, the higher your ceilings will seem. We recommend you hang them from just below the ceiling and let them pool dramatically on the floor.

5. Get smart about storage

There’s no better way to make a room instantly look smaller than to clutter it up. We mentioned above that choosing dual-purpose options is a great way to not clutter a room with too much furniture, but make sure you’re not cluttering it up with other items either. Everything in its place and a place for everything are words to live by in small spaces.

6. Letting shelving take the eye up and away

Installing shelving all the way to the ceiling is not just a great way to use your space and get extra storage, but it’s a great way to help the eye travel up. Once again, when the eye goes up, the space feels bigger. These are some of the tips we have to make a room feel and look bigger. The best advice we have is to decorate a room with things you love. If you do that, you’ll love being in it – no matter how big or small it is.
