How to Design a Living Room That’s Both Stylish and Classic

There are many reasons to embrace a classic design for your living room, one of which is that you don’t have to redecorate every season as trends change. That said, it can be hard to know what’s classic and what’s going to show signs of not being in style after just a few months. Here are our best tips to design in a way that’s relevant to today’s trends but classic enough to stand the test of time.

Choose a couch that’s both functional and fashionable

There’s nothing more classic than a comfortable couch. In fact, at Half Price Drapes we say that the number one factor to consider in your couch is comfort. Whether you like a stiffer stuffing that helps you sit upright, or an overstuffed couch that you can sink in, there’s nothing as important as making sure that your couch is functional.

Use your favorite trends as accents

Designing a home that’s both stylish and classic doesn’t mean you have to turn your back on all your favorite trends, or those popular design elements on Pinterest. It just means that you want to make the trends part of your accents – not your main pieces. For example, cushion covers can be purchased affordably and easily changed out as the trends change.

There’s nothing more timeless than neutral colors

If you really want a living room that’s going to look as great and stylish in 20 years as it does today, decorate it in neutrals. Choose some timeless cotton curtains, add some beige carpeting, and paint the wall a neutral gray. You can stick exclusively to this neutral color scheme, or you can add some pops of color here or there. Once again, just make sure that they can easily be switched out as time goes on and styles change.

Avoid clutter

This is just good design advice no matter the year and no matter your style. Find storage containers that fit in with your décor – and use them! Nothing makes your living room look less stylish than clutter everywhere. If you are truly in love with some of your “cluttered” pieces, find a place for them. Install shelves, give them a place of prominence on a side table – do what you need to, but make them look like a purposeful part of your décor, not an afterthought.
