Do You Know Your Decorating Style? Take This Quiz to Find Out

As you look for new ways to decorate your home, a great place to start is by taking the time to identify exactly what your style is. You may be surprised to learn how many people simply pick up a piece at a time and never take the time to think about how their home is coming together and what their style really is. Here are a few questions we’ve come up with that can help you better identify your own unique decorating style.

Do you like traditional, modern, or a mix of the two?

The simplest question to start with is what type of design you like in other homes. Do you tend to be drawn to traditional designs that you may have seen in your ancestor’s home, or a more modern home with sleek appliances and a clean aesthetic? Or perhaps you like a mix of the two? While you may not be able to narrow it down to a hyper specific category, you can likely figure out if you like modern or traditional.

What kind of meals do you cook at home?

If you tend to cool simple, quick meals at home then it’s likely you have a more streamlined, functional decorating style. On the other hand, if you regularly cook elaborate meals, or if you eat out more often than not, then you may have a more sophisticated, busier decorating style.

How often do you entertain guests?

First, ask how often you have guests. Next, ask how many guests typically come at once. If the answer is that you often have large groups over, then you’re likely to have a more eclectic decorating style. On the other hand, if you’re mostly a homebody with few guests, then you likely have a simpler design style.

Do you like neutral colors or layered interiors?

Finally, ask yourself if you like neutral colors used alone or do you like your interior layered with various colors? For example, look at the velvet curtains linked to above. Would you prefer those curtains hanging on their own, or do you think they’d look better layered over sheer curtains? Remember that this quiz is just a starting point. It can point you toward the type of design elements you like, but remember that there are no rules you can’t break. It’s your home and you’re the only one who has to love it.
