Budget-Friendly Home Decor Ideas

When you’re looking for ways to spruce up your home, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to make an impression. There are lots of easy ways to add more personality to your home while staying on a budget.

Brighten Up with Furniture Covers and Throw Pillows

If your living room furniture is looking tired, you can give it a makeover without the expense of buying new furniture. First, choose a furniture cover in a neutral color. These are widely available at department stores, or you can go the DIY route and get creative with a simple canvas or drop cloth cover. Next, add a new set of throw pillows (or get cases in new colors and prints to put over existing ones). Tie the whole look together with an artful throw blanket on the back of the sofa or loveseat.

Paint Accent Furniture

Coffee tables, nightstands, bookshelves, and dressers are other items that can be pricey to replace, but you can bring a fresh new look to any room by painting your existing pieces. Chalk paint is an easy way to update any existing accent furniture or dress up thrift store or yard sale finds. Because it has a relaxed, farmhouse-chic look, it’s ok if the furniture isn’t perfect. The chalk paint and some light distressing with sandpaper can create a beautiful rustic finish.

Get Creative with Wall Decor

Instead of spending big bucks on expensive artwork, you can create beautiful wall accents with a little creativity. Consider hanging decorative items, like shells or other collectibles, on small removable hooks in an arrangement on the wall. Paint a favorite quote on a decorative mirror to add personality to an entryway. Frame unexpected items, like a unique piece of fabric or a collection of dried flower petals. A few materials and a little bit of creativity can go a long way in dressing up your walls.

Change It Up with New Curtains

Choosing new curtains or drapes makes a room instantly look and feel different. To make a big impact for a small investment, consider going with something that’s very different than your current look. For example, if you have a solid neutral shade in the living room, try a bold color or a unique print. If you have always had patterned curtains in the bedroom, freshen it up with white or another relaxing neutral shade.

Switch Tablecloths and Centerpieces

Your dining room table is probably the focal point of the room, so take it up a notch by giving it a makeover with a new tablecloth. You can do this easily and inexpensively each season to keep it looking fresh and stylish. Another way to add style without much expense is to change up centerpieces. You can do this in lots of ways — a simple arrangement of glass jars with color stones, a mason jar with a burlap bow and some wildflowers, or even an assortment of fruits on a decorative platter. Even the simplest items can become an attractive centerpiece if arranged with some care and creativity.

Add Accents

Throughout the year, keep an eye out for sales on small accent items that add personality and decorative touches to your home. While you don’t want any area to become cluttered, a few small touches can make a space more beautiful and personal. Inexpensive items like decorative baskets and bins can corral clutter, and seasonal floor mats, candles, mirrors, wall art, vases, and frames can add special touches to your decor.
